How to Add Tags to YouTube Videos: Field, Examples and Checks
To add tags to an existing YouTube video, open it from Content in YouTube Studio, expand Show more, and edit the Tags field. Use tags for relevant descriptive terms or common spelling variants. They are separate from visible hashtags in a title or description.
Put the effort where it helps viewers
YouTube's own tags guide gives titles, thumbnails and descriptions more weight in discovery than tags. It describes a limited role for tags, especially when a subject is often misspelled. A large tag list is not a shortcut to an audience.
Check the actual words in your recording before choosing metadata. A generator's suggestion can name a product, place or result the video never mentions. Treat suggested terms as candidates to verify, rather than facts about your content.
Find the separate Tags field
- Sign in to the YouTube account that can edit the upload.
- In YouTube Studio, choose Content, then open the video you want to update.
- Expand Show more in the video's details and find Tags.
- Add the relevant terms, remove unrelated entries and choose Save.
For a new upload, YouTube's current instructions place tags under the additional options in the Details step. The exact labels can differ between the upload flow and an existing video's settings. Follow the official instructions for that surface. This guide's steps are documentation-backed; no account upload or metadata change was executed to create the example below.
Review candidate tags against a fixed video brief
The illustrative recording
A workshop video shows a beginner assembling one birdhouse from a kit. The speaker calls it a “birdhouse” and a “bird house.” There is no power-tool review or wildlife survey.
| Candidate term | Decision and reason |
|---|---|
| birdhouse kit | Keep if this accurately describes the kit used. |
| bird house kit | Consider as a genuine spacing variant of the same subject. |
| beginner birdhouse assembly | Keep if the instruction is actually aimed at beginners. |
| best cordless drill | Remove. The video does not compare drills. |
| viral woodworking | Remove. This offers no useful description of the task shown. |
The point is to justify each term, not to reach a quota. A common variant can be useful; dozens of arbitrary misspellings are not a researched strategy. If there is no meaningful variant to add, spend your review time on the title, thumbnail and description.
Verify the saved field and the viewer-facing details
- After saving, reopen the same video's details and confirm the Tags entries you intended to keep.
- Make sure you edited the correct upload and used an account with permission to change it.
- Do not expect Studio tags to appear as clickable
#links below the public title. For that task, follow the hashtag guide. - Keep the description useful to a reader. YouTube warns against stuffing ordinary tags into description text.
- If you assess a later performance change, record the time and every other change. Tags alone do not establish the cause.
For the main text a viewer sees before clicking, use the YouTube title review. Its worked example shows how to check a promise against the actual footage.
Keep metadata tied to the version you publish
If editing removed a section, remove tags that describe only that section. Gling can help creators prepare a spoken rough cut; reviewing what remains is still part of publishing. The editing workflow guide explains that handoff. There is no new processing, export or YouTube publishing test behind this illustrative tags example.
