Add and style captions

Add captions, choose a preset, customize a reusable style and distinguish styled video captions from an SRT file.

Add captions to a video project, then use a preset or customize a style. Caption appearance is separate from correcting the transcript and from exporting a plain subtitle file.

Add captions to the project

Gling's live web demo showing a custom caption style, font and size controls, and the notice that edits update all captions in the project.
Caption styling in the live web demo, checked 20 October 2026. Styles apply across the project.

Open the full-size screenshot.

  1. Open your video project and review the transcript and cuts.
  2. Open Enhance and turn on Auto captions.
  3. Check the caption items added to the timeline and play a few sections.
  4. Select a caption item in the timeline to open Caption style.

If a word is wrong, use Correct in the transcript. Changing the caption font or color does not correct the underlying transcription.

Choose a preset

In Caption style, select a preset such as Plain white or Plain white bg. The editor states that the style applies to all captions, including new ones. Check the project after changing it rather than assuming only the selected caption is affected.

Customize the style

  1. Select the preset you want to start from and choose Customize. This creates an editable style under Your styles.
  2. Adjust the font, size, text colors or available animation controls. Outline, Shadow, Background and Box expose additional settings when enabled.
  3. Review the result in the video preview as you edit. Changes apply as you work; the form does not need a separate Save action.
  4. Choose Styles to return to the list. Select your custom style and choose Edit when you want to adjust it again.

The form states Edits update all captions in this project. Check readability against both bright and dark parts of the footage and leave room around faces and other on-screen text.

Remove automatically added captions

Turning Auto captions off removes the captions generated by that enhancement. It does not remove every manually added caption. Turning it on again generates captions from the current edit, so review the result after changing the cut.

Export styled captions or an SRT

A finished Video (.mp4) export renders the project's visible captions into the picture. Open the result and check the appearance and timing. An Export > Subtitles (.srt) file contains subtitle text and timing; it does not carry Gling's visual styling and animations.

When continuing in another editor, check captions separately. A timeline import is not proof that every Gling caption style or effect transferred. Use the destination's subtitle workflow when you need editable subtitles.
